Why subscribe? For the Beats (clippings, commentary and bibliographies on the burning issues of the day), occassional Essays, written from the heart, Reviews and occasional Notes. My motto comes from Harry Belafonte: “I have work to do. I’ll speak out when I can.”
To check it out before subscribing, just click No Thanks or Read Without Subscribing at bottom. All views are my own and not those of any employer or organization for which I am a consultant.
This is my very part-time effort to become a re-journalist—a term I made up to refer to former journalists who have the bug again. Journalism was my first vocational love, via my work in the late 1960s with the Michigan Daily, Liberation News Service, the National Guardian, and the Student Communications Network. Last year, the Washtenaw Jewish News assigned me to write Voices of Cleveland's Palestinian Community and I got the “bug” again and started this substack! I have a business card for Speaking from the Heart—it has a union bug on it—and I have a Reporter’s Notebook! But when I attend an event, I attend as a citizen, unless I announce my wish to cover an event, and I do not report on any conversations or publish any photos without permission. I admire reporters and am a total news addict, but need to cut back on the number of beats I actively update. If ever i turned to journalism as my main vocation, thanks to Mark Puente for this tip on how to do research.

The home page link to My Beats is here: https://michaelalandover.substack.com/s/lagniappe-a-little-bit-extra. But you cannot see that link from the Substack APP, only from a web link. Lagniappe, a Cajun term from my NOLA years, means a little bit extra. What other substack also provides a veritible clipping service and bibliography?

I hope to find a way to speak out in a way that is consistent with my ethical reponsibilities as a social worker and sociologist, and in order to contribute to movements for peace and social justice, to dismantle human injustice and to pursue human liberation, about which I continue to do theoretical work.
